If you are between 12 and 17 and you use TikTok, you have probably seen hundreds of skincare routine videos. Accounts with millions of followers telling you which serum to use, which acid to apply, which product "changed their skin forever." It all looks great on screen. The problem is that a significant portion of that information is false — or worse, genuinely harmful to your skin.
A 2025 study analyzed the most-watched skincare videos on TikTok and found something alarming: 85% of them combined aggressive or sensitizing active ingredients, including retinol, salicylic acid, vitamin C, and chemical exfoliants. On average, each video recommended eleven potentially irritating ingredients. For an adult skin already adapted to them, that might be too much. For a teenage skin still in development, it can be a real problem.
What Is Happening to Teen Skin
Adolescents between 7 and 18 years old use an average of six facial products per day. Some apply more than ten in just a few minutes — often without realizing that several of those products contain the same active ingredient, and that overdosing on that ingredient can permanently compromise the skin barrier.
Dermatologists are reporting a significant increase in teen consultations involving contact dermatitis, product-induced acne flares, and hypersensitized skin. In other words: they went to TikTok looking for perfect skin, and ended up at the dermatologist with skin in worse shape than before.
And there is something almost no viral video mentions: only 26% of TikTok skincare routines include sun protection. Since SPF is the single most important skincare product at any age, that omission is not a small thing.
The Problem With Decontextualized Information
55% of teenagers use TikTok as their primary source of skincare information. The issue is not seeking information — it is that most of those content creators have no scientific background. They share what worked for them, on their skin type, in their climate, with their genetics. That does not mean it will work for you.
The TikTok algorithm also rewards content that generates reaction, not content that is accurate. A video claiming "sunscreen causes cancer" (false) gets more views than one explaining how to read an INCI list. Misinformation travels faster than truth.
What Teen Skin Actually Needs
Skin between ages 12 and 17 has very specific characteristics: it produces more sebum than adult skin, has a more sensitive skin barrier, and is responding to constant hormonal shifts. It does not need retinol. It does not need ten products. It does not need to replicate the routine of a 30-year-old influencer.
What it does need:
1. **Gentle cleansing**: without harsh detergents that break down the hydrolipidic film.
2. **Balanced hydration**: that regulates without overwhelming.
3. **Daily sun protection**: no exceptions, all year round.
At 4Teens, every product was designed with exactly this in mind. Our cleansing gel uses Sodium Cocoyl Apple Amino Acids and Decyl Glucoside — ultra-gentle plant-derived surfactants that clean without stripping. No sulfates, no ingredients that leave skin feeling tight. We also include Lactobacillus/Punica Granatum Fruit Ferment Extract (pomegranate ferment) to support the skin's microbiome from the very first wash.
Our moisturizing cream blends plant oils like Plukenetia volubilis (sacha inchi) and Cannabis sativa Seed Oil with adaptogenic mushroom extracts including Ganoderma lucidum (reishi), Inonotus obliquus (chaga), and Cordyceps sinensis. Ingredients backed by science, formulated for young skin in development — not for mature skin chasing anti-aging results.
And our SPF is not optional: it is the step that closes the routine, the one that 74% of TikTok's viral skincare videos somehow forget to include.
Before Following the Next Trend, Ask Yourself This
Does the person in that video have dermatological training? Do they know your skin type? Do they know which ingredients you are already using and how they interact with what they are recommending?
TikTok can be entertaining. But your skin is not a trend. It is yours forever.
At 4Teens, we believe teenagers deserve real information, products formulated for them, and a routine that works without complexity. Because taking care of your skin should not be confusing. It should be simple, safe, and effective.
