Walk into any pharmacy or beauty store and you'll find two kinds of skincare: products for babies, and products for adults. Anti-aging serums. Retinol creams. SPF formulas packed with chemical filters. Cleansers designed for mature skin concerns.
But where are the products for the skin in between?
Teen skin is not adult skin. It's not baby skin either. It's something entirely its own — actively developing, hormonally sensitive, microbiome-rich — and for the most part, the beauty industry has completely ignored it.
That's the problem 4Teens was built to solve.
What Makes Teen Skin Different
During adolescence, the skin goes through significant changes driven by hormonal shifts. Oil production increases. The skin barrier is still maturing. The microbiome — the ecosystem of bacteria that lives on the skin surface and plays a key role in immunity and balance — is developing its own equilibrium.
This means teen skin is more reactive, more sensitive, and more easily disrupted than adult skin. It doesn't need anti-aging actives. It doesn't need heavy preservative systems designed for a different skin biology. What it needs are ingredients that work with what's already happening, not against it.
The Problem With Adult Products on Teen Skin
Most teens — and most parents — don't realise that the products sitting in the family bathroom were formulated with a completely different person in mind.
Chemical SPF filters
Many adult sunscreens and moisturisers with SPF contain chemical filters such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate. Unlike mineral filters, these ingredients work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat — and to do that, they need to penetrate the skin. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals including JAMA have detected these filters in blood, urine, and breast milk after topical application. Several have demonstrated estrogenic activity in laboratory studies.
For a developing body already navigating significant hormonal change, this is worth paying attention to.
Parabens
Methylparaben and propylparaben are among the most widely used preservatives in adult skincare. They are effective and inexpensive — which is why they appear in so many formulas. They are also classified as xenoestrogens, meaning they can mimic the hormone oestrogen in the body.
Again: for adult skin, the risk-benefit calculation may look very different than for a teenager going through puberty.
Formulas built for different concerns
Beyond specific ingredients, adult skincare is simply designed around adult skin concerns — loss of elasticity, deep hydration, pigmentation, fine lines. These are not the concerns of a 14-year-old. Applying these formulas to younger skin doesn't just risk unnecessary ingredient exposure; it risks disrupting a microbiome that is still finding its balance.
What 4Teens Does Differently
4Teens was formulated from scratch — not adapted from an existing adult range, not a baby product repackaged. Every ingredient decision was made with teen skin biology in mind.
Mineral SPF only
The 4Teens Protective Cream uses titanium dioxide (CI77891) and Alumina as its UV filters. These are mineral filters that sit on the surface of the skin, physically reflecting UV rays without penetrating. No bloodstream absorption. No estrogenic activity. Just clean, effective sun protection.
No parabens
All three 4Teens products — the Cleanser, the Moisturiser, and the Protective Cream — use a preservation system based on Dehydroacetic Acid and Benzyl Alcohol. This is a clean, effective alternative that avoids the xenoestrogenic concerns associated with traditional parabens.
Postbiotics and ferments for the teen microbiome
This is where the formulation goes beyond simply removing problematic ingredients. All three products contain active ferment complexes: Lactobacillus ferments and Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate — postbiotic ingredients that support and strengthen the skin's microbiome rather than disrupting it.
These are sophisticated, microbiome-active ingredients typically found in premium adult skincare at significantly higher price points. Including them in a range specifically for teen skin was a deliberate choice: teen skin deserves the good stuff too.
Botanicals and adaptogens
The 4Teens Moisturiser also contains a complex of adaptogenic and bioactive botanicals — including Ganoderma lucidum (reishi mushroom), Inonotus obliquus (chaga), Cordyceps sinensis, and Haematococcus pluvialis — alongside Griffonia Simplicifolia Seed Extract and plant-derived oils including Plukenetia volubilis (sacha inchi) and Cannabis sativa seed oil. These ingredients bring antioxidant, soothing, and balancing properties — all relevant to skin that is reactive and still developing resilience.
A Gap That Needed Closing
There has always been a gap between baby skincare and adult skincare. The assumption, perhaps, was that teenagers could just use whatever was available — their parents' products, drugstore basics, whatever happened to be in the bathroom.
The reality is that teen skin has specific needs that neither baby nor adult formulas address. And with more teenagers engaging with skincare at younger ages — driven by social media, beauty culture, and a genuine interest in looking after their skin — the need for products actually formulated for them has never been more urgent.
4Teens exists to fill that gap. Clean preservation. Mineral protection. Microbiome-supportive ferments. No anti-aging actives teen skin doesn't need. No chemical SPF filters. No parabens.
Just science that starts from the right place: teen skin, as it actually is.
